It is the time when the School 2010-2011 Year comes to an end. And it is again the time when the Santa Barbara Community Development Center’s staff has the unique opportunity to say THANK YOU Tutors! It is with joy and gratitude that we can tell to each of our Tutors how important is their HELP mentoring our Isla Vista community children that come to our Program the Isla Vista Tutoring Center. As a nonprofit organization, we have been blessed with Santa Barbara community volunteers, as well as volunteers from the UCSB student population. We can not forget to mention those volunteers that come from local churches.

Among the current volunteers, we also celebrate having some former Isla Vista Tutoring Center – IVTC students that are now High School students and are coming back to help us. They have been awesome role models to our IVTC children. Thank you to you too!

We cannot forget to mention our immense gratitude to our IVTC children’s parents who worked hard to prepare exquisite Mexican food for our ‘Thank You Tutors’ event. Thank you to all of you.

The last but not least, we crowned the event with a donor’s couple from Goleta that helped distribute certificates and gifts to IVTC Tutors and kids.
Big Thank you to all of you as we enjoyed the event as a community family. Have a great Summer!

Mom: Leticia E.

Student: Steven

Came to the US in December of 2010 from Guatemala

Q: How was your child doing in school at the start of this academic year?
A: He started over a month ago and he was very nervous about not understanding anything and how he was going to deal with that. I noticed he was frustrated. That first day after school he came home crying because he did not understood anything. It was especially hard for him because in Guatemala he was at the top of his class and he had to start all over again here, even though he had some understanding of the English language.

Q: What subjects does your child do well in school?
A: Science, Social Studies, History

Q: What subjects does your child need improvement?
A: Because of the change in language, he needs more help in math; that is the only subject that I see him struggling with.

Q: How have you seen your child improve this year in school?
A: He’s trying his hardest to learn English and do well in his classes, because he likes being the best at anything he does and he tries until he gets it.

Q: In what ways do you want to see your child improve? Academically? Socially?
A: He can adapt very easily to new social environments and he likes very much making new friends and is a very good judge of character as well.

Q: How do you feel about the IVTC, and how does your child feel about it?
A: I like that he can come here and get help with his homework and practice his English as well. He has told me he likes coming here and having the extra help he can’t ask for in school. He likes that there’s some Spanish involved here.

The following are questions we asked parents of our IV tutoring center students:

Mom: Irene S.

Student: Hasmin

Moved over a 1 year 1/2 ago around November

Q: How was your child doing at the start of this academic year?
A: She had no knowledge of English, she came here to learn, from zero. She once told me, “Even the TVs speak English !!” When she played with other kids, she wasn’t able to understand them and she would raise her hands up and say, ‘I don’t understand anything.’

Q: What subjects does your child do well in school?
A: Math–and she is improving her reading from not being able to read any English to reading 30-80 per minute now.

Q: What subjects does your child need improvement?
A: English (ESL), writing and grammar.

Q: How have you seen your child improve this year in school?
A: She can now do her homework on her own and actually finish on her own. She manages to read and understand it better.

Q: In what ways do you want to see your child improve? Academically? Socially?
A: Grammar and writing, to not be so shy when she has to speak English in front of adults mostly.

Q: How do you feel about the IVTC and how does your daughter feel about it?
A: She really loves coming, a nd she doesn’t like being absent. She likes the way she is treated here and how she is received, she said so herself. I’m thankful because I can’t personally help her with homework and she gets the help she needs here. Plus, she enjoys her time here aside from the time she uses to complete her homework.

It has been a tremendous blessings for our community since “A Rocha” Santa Barbara, a nonprofit organization with Five Loaves Farming Project, decided to partner with us. All Summer 2010, lots of volunteers donated their time to plant seeds of plants that families in Isla Vista usually consume in their houses. Monday, September 13 was the first deliver of fresh produce cultivated in the hills of our beautiful Santa Barbara. Many Isla Vista families celebrated joyfully as fresh carrots, corn, and lettuce were delivered by volunteers to our Food for Angels Program in Isla Vista.

I know that the Isla Vista community celebration was their way to show the tremendous impact that this fresh produce brings to them, and especially to their children. Thank you ‘A Rocha – Santa Barbara’! Thank you to all volunteers that worked diligently to bring this effort to reality. On behalf of the Isla Vista community families, we want to express our gratitude. And we pray for His blessings on this and many other projects that our Father might have for you in Santa Barbara. Thank you!

SBCDC, with some other church Programs and local Nonprofit Organizations that MCC supports regularly, participated in this blessed event. Pastor John Lemmond – Pastor for Gospel Action – coordinated this great effort, so all organizations can share their ministries/programs. Thank you Montecito Covenant Church for your continuous support helping Isla Vista children and families, as well as SB families, get the help they need.

The SBCDC had partnered with Calvary Baptist Church of Santa Barbara – Hispanic Ministry, known as Iglesia Bautista El Calvario de Santa Barbara, and here is there report to share how this food distribution ministry has helped them and their community. Pastor Rolman Mazariegos’ report:

In our church we have been able to see how God is working in every area of our ministry. The Food Distribution Program has helped many families in our community to deal with the hard financial situation going on at this time.

In these last three months we have seen an increasingly number of people coming every other Thursday to benefit from the “Food distribution” ministry. We thank God for the way he has blessed this ministry. In the month of April we served 254 households, from which 31 were new. In May we had the pleasure to serve 231 households. That month we had 25 new families. In the last month of the quarter, June, we served a total of 196 households and 17 new families. As you can see the Lord has been blessing this ministry in great ways. The total number of families served this quarter was 681. We are very glad to see all of these people who come in need of assistance and leave happy with the service they receive. We would also like to point out that we have had families, which receive food from the program, attend our church services. We know that people are discovering Gods love through this ministry. We are very happy to say that our community is showing a greater interest in our church, and we believe that the food distribution program has helped lead people to God. We have great volunteers that week after week put in the time, love and dedication to this ministry and we feel blessed to have them on our team. Once again the Lord has opened many opportunities to us through this program and we are always thankful for that.

The SBCDC has the honor to be selected to participate with ‘A Rocha SB’, and be the recipient of the local organic produce that is managed and produced by this organization and all volunteers working with them. As they define the purpose of this organization, they will provide food for families in need, restore local farmland, provide practical ways to steward creation locally, and serve as a conservation study of native pollinators.
A Rocha SB selected our Food distribution Program – Food for Angels – to be the recipients of the organic produce.
Recently, in May 8th 2010, we participated in the ground breaking event that kicks off the hand-working part of this project.
The Board of SBCDC, our staff and all volunteers are greatly moved with this opportunity to serve our community families together.

Over the last few months, the Isla Vista Tutoring Center has been adjusting through some transitions. As some of you know, the previous tutoring center coordinator, Laura Otaola, took an amazing job with Young Life. Two young ladies who have been volunteering at IVTC have stepped in to fill the position. They are Alexandra Flores Valdivieso and Hannah Nicole Johnson. Both have a passion for these awesome kids (even when they act up) and a desire to build them up in character. Each individual involved at the tutoring center wants to see it grow. This means growth in the number of children coming through our doors, growth in the number of volunteers and development of extracurricular activities for the children. Ultimately, we want the IVTC grow and better meet the needs of children in this community.

“I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.” Luke 10: 21

Lets continue to pray for the children at IVTC. Their well-being, health, and families.
